Caring for a parent after a stroke: the first 90 days
Neurological recovery is fastest in the first three months. Here is how families can make that window count.
The brain is most adaptable in the weeks right after a stroke. Consistent, repetitive practice during this period drives the biggest functional gains.
Set up the room for independence: bed at knee height, a firm chair with armrests, clear walking paths and grab support near the bathroom.
Practice matters more than intensity. Short sessions several times a day — reaching, gripping, sit-to-stand, guided walking — beat one long session a week.
Protect the weaker shoulder. Never pull the affected arm to move your parent, and support it when they sit up.
Look after the caregiver too. We train families during visits so the exercises continue safely between sessions, and so no single person carries the whole load.
