5 daily habits that quietly ease back pain

Small changes to how you sit, sleep and lift can do more for a stiff lower back than any single treatment.

Most back pain we treat at home is not caused by one dramatic injury. It builds up from hours of sitting, weak core muscles and a mattress that stopped supporting you years ago.

Start with your chair. Keep both feet flat, hips slightly higher than knees, and the screen at eye level. Set a reminder to stand and walk for two minutes every 40 minutes — movement, not posture perfection, is what keeps discs healthy.

Next, learn to hinge. Bend at the hips with a neutral spine when you pick anything off the floor, whether it is a bucket or a toddler. Your therapist can teach this in a single session and it protects you for life.

Add a short daily routine: glute bridges, cat-camel and a gentle hamstring stretch. Ten minutes is enough when it happens every day.

Finally, sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under them. If pain wakes you at night or travels down the leg, get assessed — that pattern needs a proper plan, not just habits.
